Carole said, "Close your eyes," and my kids corrected her: "Close your
ears!" She fiddled with an ornament on the other side of the Christmas
tree, and then I heard the unmistakable sound of a Wurlitzer 150 playing
"Over the Waves"! It's an obvious gift for a carousel nut. When a tiny
button is pushed it plays for about 20 seconds, and then the sound stops,
thankfully! It seems to be an audio wave file recording, reproduced
through an all-too-small loudspeaker.
The ornament is a miniature carousel gazebo with a horse in the style of
Charles Looff, about 3 inch diameter by 5 inch high. It's powered from
an empty lamp socket in a twisted-pair string of 15-volt Christmas lamps.
Carole says she bought it on sale after Christmas last year for less than
$20.
