My horror story relates to piano rolls and Christmas.
Two years ago, my sister sent Christmas packages to myself and another
sister, Jean, at my address. I knew my gift was piano rolls, and eagerly
awaited their arrival. Sufficient time had passed for their delivery,
but no packages arrived. My sister checked with the express service and
learned that the packages had been delivered the week before. Since I
was at work, someone at a neighbor's house two doors away had signed for
them.
When I went to the neighbor's house to inquire about the packages, she
knew nothing about them, and did not recognize the person's name who had
signed for them. She then reluctantly mentioned that her ex-boyfriend
had spent some time at her house the previous week. When I asked to
speak to him, she replied that he was in jail!
I let the investigating officer handle things from there. The ex-
boyfriend was incarcerated for (surprise!) theft and forgery, among
other things. Since he was facing more serious charges, he had no
problem confessing to this petty theft.
The joke was on him. He was hoping to find good things in our packages.
Instead, he found piano rolls which are useless without a player piano,
and a ladies outfit which wasn't his size or color.
There was a happy ending: the investigating officer brought the gifts to
us the day after Christmas, so I got my piano rolls and Jean got her new
outfit.
