Re: Materials for Printing Word Rolls
By Spencer Chase

Regarding the printing of words on piano rolls, I have the following
not-very-helpful input. Eric Bernhoft uses an old Mag Card typewriter,
and from his description of the process it doesn't sound like fun.
I have a favorite old printer that can do the same job with less effort,
but it is not easy to connect to a Mac, which Eric prefers to use.

The Diablo Hytype II and later printers (now very hard to find since they
have no value and are disposed of whenever they are found) have some very
useful features. All the many features such as vertical and horizontal
tabs can be downloaded into the printer with ASCII character sequences.
Infinitely long pages can be faked with various combinations of settings
and lines can be set to fine precision.

This is the printer that I hope to modify as a first attempt at roll
punching. I have extensive documentation on these printers, but my last
printer itself died a smoky death due to water damage. If anyone has
one of these printers, I can supply the manuals that address the custom
printing options and features. I don't know how close to "stencil font"
you can get with a Daisy Wheel but some of the fonts are okay and easy
to read.
