Rebuilding Cremona "G" Valves

I am just getting started on my Cremona "G" piano with open flutes. I've been putting it off for several years while working on other people's stuff. I decided since my shop is over crowded right now I would restore it as I take it apart and do the piano last.
I did the unit valves in the top of the case and hated the valves. I hoped that the stack had different valves perhaps with a lower guide but they are the same with only the top guide and the stem screwed into the pouch through a two fiber disc's.
Has anyone restored enough of these instruments to be able to suggest what problems to look out for before they happen? Is there a "helpful hint" for setting these pouches with the hole in the fiber disc in the right position for a vertical valve stem after the top board is in place? I know it's never easy but any advice will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I found this piano in Mississippi and it was in near perfect never been touched unrestored condition only missing the motor. Still being near the Gulf there is a lot of rust but I'm used to that. The man I bought it from had removed the bottom pneumatic deck and split the 20 pneumatic boards off it (badly) and numbered none of them. :-))
At least he left the other two alone and gave up and his wife finally convinced him to sell it to me. (I like his wife, a very sensible woman.) |
