QRS Key-contact Strip
By Andy Taylor, forwarded by John A. Tuttle

Hi Andrew,

You're asking the wrong person. I don't get involved in electronic
modifications such as you described. However, I've seen many articles on
the topic in the Mechanical Music Digest. I will forward this letter to
the MMD and your question will most likely appear in tomorrow's digest.

Musically,
John A. Tuttle

Mr. Tuttle, I have just traded a restored player to Bill Jelen for a
computer. It has a Cakewalk program and a conversion file to work on the
Tonnesen's perforator. After great effort I managed to learn to run the
thing. I have just installed a recording strip (QRS) on my player piano
to record my roll making efforts. I'd like to connect some Midi air
valves to my player. I understand that part, but I know I need somthing
to run them from the Midi Out port of my computer. That is where I am
confused.

I read in the AMICA Bulletin how to make Midi air valves; simple enough,
but I know I need some sort of device to turn them on and off. What is
the name of this device and how and where do I find one? If I can play
the pneumatic stack from the computer, I will have a good idea of how to
edit the midi file to work properly when the roll is cut. Also, the
record strip will not work well enough to record from the player action
due to what I call "key bounce."

I have thought of fastening the key to the sticker, but that will most
likely make the action too stiff and make the piano action too hard to
remove. Modifying the record strip would be difficult because it has no
adjustment for the rail breaks. If it did, I'd mount it on the piano
action itself. Any advice?

Thank you,
Andrew Taylor
