The "Titanic" Orchestrion
By Robin Pratt

The rumor is that the Welte Orchestrion that was built for the RMS
"Titanic" was not completed in time for the maiden voyage, hence it
survived by missing the boat (the ship, actually). I have heard a
recording of this instrument (which was wonderful and *in tune*), and
also that a few years back it was offered for sale in a large collection
of instruments in the AMICA Bulletin.

The photo shows a pipe facade, handsome and an Edwardianly elegant case.
However, in all of the reading I have done over the years regarding the
"Titanic", I have *never* come across any reference to this instrument.
On the other hand, the instrument is itself Titanic! Not to mention a
musical delight! I want it.

[ In October, 1996, I visited Schloss Bruchsal museum and I saw and
[ heard the wonderful Welte Philharmonie organ which presumably was
[ intended for the ill-fated Titanic. I purchased a CD, ""Musica
[ Mechanica", which was produced by the museum in 1987. On this CD the
[ organ plays "Loin du bal" (E. Gillet); that may be the recording you
[ heard. ... Could there be more than one "Titanic" organ?!
