Musical Box Definition
By Nancy Fratti

HAH!

I opened a little can of worms!!! and a little more
music box discussion!!!!

Such was the intention!!!

Steve Goodman is confused... aren't we all!!??

I doubt if there's ever been a stringent definition of 'musical box'
and, personally, I don't think there should be! It can include ALL
automatic music, if you like, or be a little more 'compartmentalized'
to DISC and CYLINDER musical boxes (and related items). For ease of
understanding what someone is talking about I consider the above the
loose definition for music box; I call a roller organ a roller organ,
a piano (reproducing, player or otherwise) a piano and a band organ a
band organ.

Some of my band organ friends have subdivided definitions of band
organ vs. orchestrions too!

I, personally, consider a Regina Concerto a DISC BOX because, obviously,
it plays a BIG punched disc...same with chordaphones. I'm sure I could
get some argument on that too!!! A Concerto could be argued to have
no musical combs, thus not be considered a disc musical box.....I don't
like to be that rigid!

What do our other musical box fanatics think of this?????
