Suction Box
By Sam Harris

I thought PPCo's suction box was great. I ordered the Full Automation Kit
#2800.

One small complaint would be that it box was a little too large to fit in
the bottom of the piano without removing one of the equalizers, and there
was no way I was going to do that! I would refuse to do that to any piano.
I know you can just mask off the suction trunk channels and lay the
equalizer in the bottom but then you don't have a true "pumper" now you
have handicapped pumper with an electric suction unit. Anyway instead of a
bottom instillation I just set it beside the piano and run the hose inside.

Regarding the control of the motor speed on re-roll the last kit I received
had a micro switch that you could install in conjunction with the re-roll
linkage that would automatically switch the motor to a lower RPM on
re-roll. Is there something wrong with this set up. For me it has worked
great. I have been using the unit for over a year now with no problems
except for the cheap flap valve or cut-off valve located inside the suction
unit. If you wanted to pump the valve would leak. I still am not satisfied
with it I simply replaced the original with thick flap leather connected
with hide glue and a tack strip. I did not make a strip like found inside
most bellows pumps and if I do it over I will construct a flap valve like
found on Standard pumping bellows. What are your thoughts or fixes to this
problem.

With the unit mounted outside it is a little noisy but the player is tight
and it does not demand a high RPM which cuts down the noise.

Personally I have been pleased with this box, but if there is a better box
I would like to know about it, but at this time I would recommend and
install this unit in any standard 88 pumped with no reservations.
