Preservation of Mechanical Music
By John Phillips

Hey, what's this, Robbie? In yesterday's MMD (97.08.09) you said:

>[ (Do we need to transcribe the "pumping line" and "tempo line"
>[ of some early rolls? Ugh! ;)

Why ever not? For a musical dunce like me they are very useful. Sure,
the tempo line is not always very accurately drawn, and sometimes the
expression line gets out of step, but they give one some idea of how to
go about pedaling an unfamiliar piece of music.

The Aeolian Co. certainly thought the tempo line was important. I
believe they charged sixpence extra for Metrostyled rolls.

I'm pleased that my Metrostyle-Themodist upright still has its Metrostyle
pointer. So there!

[ I sawed off the tempo pointer bracket so that my kids wouldn't
[ damage the rolls. Ah, well -- another challenge! We shall devise
[ a way to preserve the coloured lines too. -- Robbie
