Transcribing Rolls to MIDI Files
By Wayne Stahnke

This note is intended for Neil Rosenberg, who posted a note in the MMD
dated 970801 asking about converting his roll library to MIDI files.
I have posted it here, rather than sending it to Neil privately, at the
request of Jody Kravitz, editor of the MMD.

Neil, I have designed and built a very high-resolution optical scanner
that accepts any kind of roll, along with associated software that can
create a MIDI file from the resulting scan. I would be happy to scan
your rolls for you as a service.

Up to this point my efforts have been largely confined to scanning rolls
for the purpose of making copies; I send the finished perforator control
files to Richard Tonnesen of Custom Music Rolls, who then perforates the
desired number of copies and supplies a finished product. However, this
step is not necessary if your interest is in hearing a performance on an
electronic instrument, rather than a pneumatic instrument.

Get in touch with me privately by e-mail, or call me at 310-391-4921, and
we can talk about your project. With best regards,

Wayne Stahnke
