Big Roll Collections
By D. L. Bullock

Who has the largest roll collections around the world? Do you know of
any large repository of music rolls of any kind? My guesses would
include:

Chicago Public Library, who has complete collections of literature on
rolls. Do they also have rolls?

The Piano Archive -- Somewhere. Where are they, anyway?

[ IPAM, Music School, Univ. of Maryland. -- Robbie

Jasper Sanfilippo's Palace of Music. He has the instruments, does he
also have extensive roll collections?

I know the Joseph Tushinsky collection (Superscope/Marantz/Pianocorder)
at one time had 18,000 Ampico, Duo Art and Welte rolls. I heard they
were sold to Yamaha when they bought Pianocorder in order to put them out
of business and out of competition. (Predatory Capitalism in action.)

Anyone else?

Please report to me your estimate (guesstimate) as to how many rolls are
in the collections you know of. I will later report what I find and why
I want to know. No, I am not putting them in the Guinness Book of
Records!

My small collection is only about 2,000 rolls (my guess) I know several
others with more than that.

[ Trebor Tichenor, the acknowledged "Professor of Ragtime" in St. Louis,
[ has about 10,000 rolls, I'd guess. He needs a good pumper piano, too,
