It's interesting to note the different uses for 'that other pedal.'

I've seen it used as originally (?) intended for holding a played note.

Also for use as a sustain for the bass portion of the scale.

On some pianos it was used to bring down a mandolin rail.

On others yet it was use to bring down a muffler to allow banging away
on the piano and still let people sleep in the next room.

I've seen pianos in which 'that other pedal'  was not and never had
been connected to anything.  It just was there for looks and probably
cost a bunch of extra bucks to the first buyer.

And on one piano, I think it was a Clark player, I believe it even
turned on the phonograph.
