Tipping a Grand Piano
By Terry Smythe

I'm currently working on my 1912 foot-pumped 6-foot Mason player grand,
and I need to put it on its feet for a few weeks, then return it to its
dolly to finish up the work underneath, then again onto its feet after
completion. I work alone and I would like to be able to tip it onto its
feet and back again by myself. It's real heavy, and I'm pushing 70.

The dolly under the piano is about 6-foot x 20-inches, on four 4-inch
casters. My little shop is about the size of a single car garage, and
I do have a secure 2 x 4 structure off the ceiling from which I could
hang some kind of block and tackle.

In the past, I've always had to prevail upon friends, family or neighbors
to help me do this, always a bit of a logistical bind. Are there any
devices out there to facilitate this kind of purpose? What do others
among us do?

Thoughts of others?

Thanks.

Terry Smythe
