Sustain Pedal Usage
By Jeffrey Borinsky

In MMD 971025 Damon Atchison discusses sustain pedal usage.

I believe that sustain pedal action is direct on 88-note players.
While I claim little specialist knowledge, I have not encountered an
88-note pumper with a lock/cancel action.

In my own (albeit limited) experience I tend to apply the sustain
pedal for _less_ time than is indicated by the perforations. Maybe my
piano is a bit too resonant or has slightly worn dampers. In any case
I find sustain varies widely between rolls. Some are just right with
automatic sustain, others are desperately overpedalled (for my piano
and ears) while a few need a bit more sustain.

My suspicion is that the sustain tracks were often poorly edited.
