Proof Copies of Tempola Rolls Arrive
By Andy Taylor

Hi Gang, We got our proof copies of our rolls today from Custom Music
Rolls and we are very satisfied with the results. Everything is turning
out great. We just wanted to pass along that our Tempola rolls will be
ready in about a couple of weeks if all goes well. :-)

Regarding the sustain pedal thread: I have used the sustain pedal
sparingly, because most players don't have 'em or they don't work, and I
used the age-old trick of extending the perforations. For the MIDI
folks, a floppy disk is available of all numbers, 13 total. Now, since
I have figured out how to do this, there will be more to come.

I am still having trouble with my roll reader. It is pneumatic over
electronic, and it does work but the regulation is very critical
(in regard to note start times and end times), requiring a lot of
re-editing. I read somewhere that the Gulbransen record strip reads
the key movement optically. Does anyone out there have this device or
know anything about it? It might be a good basis for a roll copier.
(Leave it to me to experiment with expensive electronics!)

[ The description of the Gulbranson strip I read a few years ago indi-
[ cated that it used a conductive-rubber pad to sense the key position
[ and also to determine the key velocity, which is similar to my Roland
 [ keyboard. It's a very reliable system. -- Robbie

Custom music rolls has a very accurate roll reader, and their rolls track
great despite the fact that I haven't got around to rebuilding our tracker
yet! I have developed a way to convert their perf-control files into
Midi, and it works well. This has been a most rewarding and educational
experience, and we plan to do more rolls (more are in the works).

I really hope all of you will enjoy our rolls, and positive and negative
feedback is always welcomed. Please check out our revised web page:

Having more fun that we should,
