Ragtime Automated Music (RAM)
By John A. Tuttle

Hi Andy and Chris, I've had a number of experiences with RAM systems.
Fortunately, I have yet to buy one for myself.

However, I some years back, I did a rebuilding job for a customer which
required a new set of stack valve/pneumatic units, two lock & cancel
units, a few drum beaters and a repeater unit. Since the unit I was
working on had been revamped numerous times in an effort to 'keep it
going', I also asked RAM for schematics of the original system.

After receiving all the requested parts, I did as any competent
technician would and I tested everything prior to installing. Well,
the repeater didn't repeat, a number of the valve/pneumatic units
leaked badly and one or two drum beaters didn't work at all.

I called RAM and explained the problems and the replacement parts
arrived a couple of week later -- with a bill! I promptly called to
tell them I would not pay the bill but that I would be happy to return
the defective parts at my cost. They said that wouldn't be necessary.
On that sour note we parted company.

I still have the laughable schematics they sent and one or two of the
(at the time) recently redesigned valve/pneumatic units. These units
are virtually unrepairable and I do not recommend the system to anyone,
novice or professional.

Musically,

John A. Tuttle
