SoundBlaster AWE64
By Jody Kravitz

I think the issue with the CPU speed is that -- in order to do
64-voice polyphony -- 32 of the voices are computed, in real time,
on the Pentium processor. It wouldn't surprise me if it would work
on a slower machine if the tune wasn't too "busy". Does anyone have
any experience with this ?

I've got one of the AWE64 "Gold" cards in my system and I really
like it. To be sure, the violin sounds from Creative's earlier
products left a lot to be desired. I use Bluegrass tunes as one of my
sound card test cases, and the AWE-32 is awful at these. My Roland
Sound Canvas (SC-55) is still better.

I've not been able to find a supplier for the 4-Meg add-on memory
boards. For some of the stuff that George Bogatko is doing, 4 Meg is
not enough. You could put two 16-Meg SIMMs in an AWE-32 and use 28 Meg
for sound fonts. It's not clear if you can even buy such an upgrade for
an AWE-64 yet. Please let us know pricing and, if possible, the
vendor's part number if you get one of these upgrade boards.

Thanks

Jody Kravitz
