Music Box with Japanese Melodies
By Larry Greenfield

I have a (probable) Paillard ratchet wind cylinder box with a 4-7/8"
cylinder which plays 4 tunes from the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta
Madame Butterfly. I realize that this is not true Japanese music, but
is as close as I can come in my collection.

The box is black lacquer, with a raised Japanese scene with 2 ladies in
an outdoor setting on the outside of the lid. There are music boxes
out there which have Scottish tunes and I've heard of boxes with
Persian tunes, but have never seen one.

Also, the Adler/Fortuna company made boxes in Leningrad, and there is a
collector in LA, who has a 11" Fortuna disc box with all the labels in
Russian Cyrilic, such as stop/play label. I have a portable hand crank
78-rpm record player in a hard vinyl/metal case with all the labels and
the decal in Russian, along with about 12 Russian records. That's it
for now.
