Replacing Bridle Straps
By Don Teach

The replacements come in three basic versions. The easiest to use are
the ones with cork on them to go in the back of the hammer butt.

For the record there has been debate for years as to the purpose of
bridle straps. In my own experience I have seen pianos made without
them. One theory is that they were there to keep the jack from
slipping under the hammer butt when removing the action. One other
theory is they help repetition (why have a repetition spring if this
were the case).

I really believe the purpose is to support the whippen when the action
is removed, but I am sure there are other opinions.
