Calliope (Kalliope) is one of the muses (nine is their number in the
later Greek classical period), daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (Memory,
one of the Titans).  She is the muse of epic poetry.

The proper Greek pronunciation of her name is Ka-lie-o-pee;  the
pronunciation Kalli-ope is peculialry American and smacks of the hills.
Somebody else can give us the names of Calliope's eight sisters -- not
hard to find.
