Hal Davis rightly wonders at the English (and Australian) pronunciation
of lever and schedule.  Similarly I have puzzled at the American
inconsistency between Kansas and Arkansas, Des Moines and Des Plains,
help and herb and so on. I guess a lack of consistency is what makes
the English language both interesting and difficult to learn.
