Believe it or not, sulfur dioxide has been noted in song.  The song
"Air" (from the rock musical "Hair") is a satirical commentary on
noxious compounds in the environment:

   Welcome, sulfur dioxide
   Hello, carbon monoxide
   The air, the air, is e-ver-y-where
   Breathe deep while you sleep, breathe deep...

The song ends with profuse coughing and gagging.

Concerning the spelling of sulfur/sulphur, if sulfur is the American
spelling and sulphur is the British spelling, then why is the name of
the small town in Arkansas spelled Sulphur Springs?  Perhaps the
original settlers of the community were British?  ;-)
