New Orleans Riverboat Calliope
By Walter Price

When I was in New Orleans last, our family took a short ride on one
of the riverboats that operate near the mall. The boat I was on had
calliope-like instrument that was played by compressed air. It did
not look to be an antique and it was played not by keyboard but by
automated means. Does anybody know about modern sources of calliope
instruments? By the way, it was quite loud and very enjoyable.

[ Likely you saw a modern replica of the old Tangley or National air
[ calliope, perhaps made by either Bob Stanoszek or Miner Mfg. Co.
[ The instruments, old and new, are often fitted with a player action.
[ Search for 'calliope' in the MMD Archives at our web site (info at
[ end of Digest). -- Robbie
