BBC Radio 3 carried an item about Compton Mackenzie today. As well as
being a successful author, he founded "Gramophone" magazine in 1923,
which today celebrates its 75th anniversary.
The commentator, Sean Rafferty, said that Mackenzie was a great music
lover, and so in 1923 had a player piano shipped out to his home in the
Channel Islands. It appears he was most unhappy with the instrument
and so acquired a gramophone instead. The rest is history.
