Basic Piano Physics

I don't remember much physics, but I do know that acceleration requires
force.  If you have disconnected the force (once the jack escapes) you
can not accelerate the hammer.  The only way it could accelerate is by
a force acting on the hammer.  The only force remaining is air drag.
This would decelerate the hammer.
