Mechanical Music in the Movies
By Bruce Miller

Another movie that had some interesting mechanical musical instruments
is "The Duchess and Dirtwater Fox", an amusing western starring George
Segal and Goldie Hawn. Parts of this movie were filmed in the old Gold
Coin Saloon in Central City, Colorado. There were quite a number of
nickelodeons and orchestrions in the Gold Coin. Most played but few
played well.

The Gold Coin was an authentic western saloon and was a fun place to
go. This was, of course, before gambling became legal in Central City
and all the small historic places fell to the casinos that moved in.

It is a shame that so many of the good, old, interesting places have
just become footnotes in history.

I hope someone is keeping a list of all this movie information that is
appearing on MMD.
