English Translations of 'Spud'
By John Farrell

In yesterday's MMD Robbie wondered if the word "spud" had other English
translations. We share the potato meaning (however be careful -- your
fries are our chips), but you might not know that, here in England,
Spud is the invariable nickname of anybody with the surname Murphy.

I am delighted to report that my five-year-old grandson has invented
an ingenious corruption -- according to him roast potatoes are
"Row SPUDadoes".

You have my permission to reprint this, education is important.
