Band Organs in the Cold
By Hal Davis

On a number of occasions we've used one or our band organs for
Christmas parades. In Michigan it gets quite cold, and on one occasion
the temperature was at about zero F.

In this case, we arrived early to the parade lineup and the trailer the
organ is in was closed tightly. I used a kerosene heater to try to
warm it up, just in case, for the half hour or so before we had to get
ready to roll. I usually ride in the trailer with the organ. I about
froze my tail off that time but the organ performed fairly well.

It was a bit sluggish but I doubt anyone else noticed. Following the
parade we played "on spot" for another two hours, of course, with the
front of the trailer wide open. The organ performed well the whole
time and no damage was done to the organ.
