Liquid in Jukebox Bubble Tubes

This request is not exactly a true mechanical music question, but
having an interest in other types of music instruments as well, I hope
someone else's interests cross over to the jukebox area and can give me
some advice.

Does anyone know what the chemical liquid is inside the "Bubble Tubes"
that are from the Golden Age jukeboxes and the old Christmas lights?

A friend of mine who works with neon lighting and I would like to
experiment with building a custom bubble tube display, but as of this
date we have not been able to determine the chemical make-up of the
liquid.  I have been told everything from alcohol to phenol.

If anyone knows for sure, I would appreciate your answer.
