Collectibles "Known to Exist"
By Julian Burke

Hello MMD'ers, In reference to the number of Violanos still in
existence, I always notice when someone or an ad submits "How many
are left?"

I collect all kinds of things and among them are 50's-60's convertibles.
I have a book on American convertibles and it shows "estimated number
to exist". It seems to be about 10%. This figure seems very reasonable
to me except when I looked up Corvettes. It shows about the same
existing (10%).

This is where I disagree. When was the last time you saw a Corvette
go to the shredder? They don't! They were _always_ highly coveted,
and all still pretty much exist (maybe in parts alone, but they still
exist say for ones burned up in a fire)

I always like the statement "Known to exist". It is always a happy day
for a collector to find an item in the hands of someone who knew
nothing about it or what it was worth. (And sell it cheap too!)

I still think there is plenty out there left undiscovered and this is
what keeps us going. Trying to put a number on it is impossible.

Happy hunting,
Julian Burke
