Steam Calliope Tuning
By Kevin Way

Recently on what seem to be one of the hottest days in September, a
friend wanted me to tune his Calliope(air, not steam). After spending
time polishing the pipes it was time to do the tuning. I started around
7:30 am (I bet the neighbors just loved me that day). As the temperature
was rising that morning and the temperature in blower was increasing
the pipes would sharpen. To insure the Calliope would sound good while
it was warm, we moved it to a building to keep it out of the sun and
stabilize the temperature. The blower was run until it was warm, then
I could tune the pipes. As a result of our efforts it sounds great
while its warm, its a little on the flat side when we first start it up.

From my experience with the temperatures of the sun and blower heat,
the variable steam temperatures would seem very touchy.

I have a question. Calliope's that are steam powered, what pressure do
they operate on.
