Rebuilding Themodist Control Unit

I'm restoring an Aeolian Themodist control unit, circa 1908.  It has
two valves deep inside I'd like to restore, but I'm not sure of the
best way to gain access to them.  I see no screws.  Should I try
splitting it apart with a putty knife?
