And to add more fuel to this fire, there is the possibility that the
"electrical" studio recordings were done on a Mason & Hamlin.

I have a number of original Rachmaninoff 78s, both acoustic and
electric.  Unfortunately, the kids got to the turntable and ruined
the needle so I'll have to get another.  But then I'll play around with
them and try to expand the dynamic/frequency range of the electrical
recordings and see what I come up with.

Not much can be done with the acoustics -- getting blood from a stone,
and all that -- but sometimes things work out.
