Hicks Barrel Piano
By Philip Jamison

I have an interest in Hicks-style barrel pianos. These are the
portable "vertical" style used in the mid 19th century. I'm trying
to find photographs of the type with automata, and I wonder if anyone
can help.

I have 2 photos so far, but neither is credited. One is in 'The
Curious History of Music Boxes" by Mosoriak (pg. 176), the other in
"The Music Box" (Journal of the MBS of GB), Vol. 8, No. 5, page 206.
Anyone know who currently owns these? Any leads on more?

Since my last posting, I discovered a Hick piano with moving figures
in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This is nicely
illustrated in their book "American Musical Instruments".
