Rachmaninoff Ampico CD Reviewed in BBC Music Magazine
By Malcolm Cole

Wayne Stahnke's CD, Telarc CD-80489, has been reviewed in the BBC Music
Magazine, January 1999 edition. The critic David Beckill has this to
say in his main points:

"The results represent a quantum leap beyond Decca's reproductions
of these recordings, which in turn are far preferable to most other
reproducing piano recordings. From the first moments of the C-sharp
Minor Prelude, the dynamic graduations, voicings and even pedallings
are not just noticeable but generally characteristic of Rachmaninovs
  playing."

This is high praise indeed, and Mr. Breckhill makes quite a few other
positive comments. For my own part I have always thought that Wayne's
CD is simply the best recording of a reproducing piano ever made.

[ I heard that the January 1999 issue of "Fi" Magazine has a review
[ by the grand ol' master critic himself, Harold Schoenberg.
[ Has anyone seen it? -- Robbie
