Tempo of Recut Rolls
By Jim Heyworth

Hi Folks, In response to Mike Walter's question about the tempo of his
piano roll of "Minstrels," I am in agreement with Robbie's suggestion
that you match the speed of the roll to the LP. I'm not so sure about
matching the pitch unless it is really off because this may reflect a
situation in which either your or the recorded piano could have been
tuned to a slightly different standard of pitch.

The real point of my posting, though, is to mention that there are a
number of recut piano rolls in which the tempo has been "adjusted" to
the "correct" tempo according to the ear of the recutter.

This information comes from a reliable and knowledgeable collector
friend who complained to the manufacturer and was told that, "When
I don't like the tempo, I just adjust it to the point where I like it."

End of mystery ?
