Unequal Temperaments for Fretted Instruments
By Leonardo Perretti

Re: Seek "Secret of Tuning Fretted Instruments", MMDIgest 981229

Miles, I don't know the article you mention; anyway, I would suggest
another item on the same subject; maybe you are interested.

There is a book devoted to unequal temperaments, which contains a
chapter on practical fretting instructions, along with several hints
about fretting with unequal temperaments, spread through the book. The
book is: "Unequal temperaments - And their role in the performance of
early music," by Claudio Di Veroli, Buenos Aires, 1978.

I don't know if it is still available somewhere; I have a Xerox (of
a Xerox of a Xerox). If you are interested, and cannot find a copy,
please drop me an e-mail.

Happy New Year to you and all the list

Leonardo Perretti

[ I once had a Turkish "banjo" which had moveable frets of nylon
[ string wrapped twice about the neck. The performer adjusted
[ both the tuning of the open strings and the position of the
[ nylon frets before playing a song. There were only five or six
[ frets in the octave; I guess the pitch of intermediate tones
 [ wasn't important. -- Robbie
