Duo-Art Soft Pedal Methods
By Ray Bauer

> Which [soft pedal] method is used on the Steinway?

Many Duo-Art pianos have both methods. My Steinway lifts the hammer
rail with the roll perforation command. The "soft" setting (a lever
in spoolbox) shifts the action with a large pneumatic under the keybed.

By contrast, my Geo. Steck Duo-Art was tubed so that the roll
perforation caused the keyboard shift and the soft setting switch
raised the hammer rail. I have changed the tubing procedure several
times on each instrument, listening to what sounded "best" for my
listening pleasure.

For my ear, the roll command shift sounds best on the 5'4" Steck
while the hammer rail lift sounds "best" on the 6'6" Steinway (the
roll perforation command again). It was fun to experiment with the
two pianos of different sound signature.
