Music Folio: Jelly Roll Morton Piano Rolls
By Robbie Rhodes

I just received Artis Wodehouse's latest product -- a new folio
of Jelly Roll Morton piano solos, which contains her note-for-note
sheet music transcriptions of these classic solo pieces from
the Vocalstyle piano rolls: Grandpa's Spells, King Porter Stomp,
London Blues, Original Jelly Roll Blues, Shreveport Stomps,
Stratford Hunch.

Pianist Butch Thompson ("Prairie Home Companion") contributed several
paragraphs of his warm personal views about Jelly: "... Morton's way,
that wonderful combination of lyricism and down-home rhythm." The Hal
Leonard web site < http://www.halleonard.com/ > says

Jelly Roll Morton Piano Rolls - Artist Transcriptions - $ 12.95 (US)
  Inventory # HL 672433 ; ISBN: 0793598877 ; UPC: 985280298 ; 72 pages

Hal Leonard Corp. also sells two other Morton collections, which I
think are the transcriptions by James Dapogny from the phono recordings
($35), and possibly some of the J. Lawrence Cook transcriptions from the
late 1930s and 40s ($9.95). See the publishers web site for

Jelly Roll Morton - Piano Music Of Jelly Roll Morton - Piano Collection
  - $35.00
The Best Of Jelly Roll Morton - Piano Solo Composer Collection - $9.95

High-quality recuts of all the existent piano rolls made by Jelly Roll
Morton are available from BluesTone Music Rolls for $11 each. For info
contact Rob DeLand <rdeland@wwa.com>.
