Mechanical Music Terms - Fair Organs
By John Page, UK

A few enthusiasts over here in the U.K. are asking if there is any real
difference between our "Fair Organ" and the "Band Organ" in the U.S.,
or is this another example of localized terminology? "Fair" refers, of
course, to the fairs these organs operated in, but why "Band"?

John Page

[ I'm sure there's more, but a simple explanation is that the "Band
[ Organ" was equivalent to a real band playing, within the same
[ extravagant advertising simile that an "Orchestrion" was equivalent
[ to a real orchestra... So is a "Carousel Organ" a "Band Organ"
[ or a "Fair Organ"? Could a "Street Organ" be any of these? ;)
