Shellac Flakes & Applying Shellac
By Sam Harris

During the last player re-build I sealed the channels and pouch wells
with store bought shellac. After reading the MMD Archives I have
decided it would be better to make my own mixture using flakes and
denatured alcohol. Now I have 3 questions:

1. Where is the best place to get the flakes? (orange, I suppose?)
    (PPCo?)
2. What is the best mix for re-sealing channels and valve wells?
3. Should you use compressed air to blow out the excess?

Concerning the last question, I have noticed in the channels of the
deck boards there is a thick layer of shellac and it appears that if I
desire to duplicate the original application I should not blow it out
but allow it to run out on its own. What do the rest of you do and
why? I have always used air to blow out the channels but may decide to
change my procedure (at least on this player) based on what I have
observed.
