Pickup Cartridges for Old Phonographs
By Eric Bergstrom

Andy Taylor commented that his retro-fitted turntable did not play very
loud. This could be because the original turntable used a crystal
phono cartridge and his replacement, with the flip-type needle, is
probably a ceramic cartridge.

The crystal cartridges have about two volts output, whereas the ceramic
cartridges are a little over one volt. The amplifier input impedance
may also be effecting things too. Note also that ceramic cartridges
have a different frequency response, so a different degree of equali-
zation may be necessary to get proper sound quality. 'Proper' sound
quality is just as subjective as 'proper' piano sound quality -- it
depends on what you like!

Good luck, Andy -- I was hoping I'd run into you at the Elgin radio
show on Wednesday to say hello and talk radios and pianos.
