One other step that hasn't been mentioned is the conversion from
the original medium's expression coding to MIDI expression coding.

If one were merely to transcribe an Ampico or Duo-Art roll and then
immediately play it without undergoing this conversion, the (constant
volume) rumblings and tinklings in the bass and treble would be rather
distracting.
