Novelist William Gaddis and Reproducing Pianos
By Wolfgang Heisig

Critical Cultural Aspects About the Player Piano on Radio

On the German radio network Deutschlandfunk there was an interesting
radio drama about the 20th century, and also many aspects of reproducing
player pianos -- Welte-Mignon, Duo-Art, Ampico (the author forgot
Hupfeld DEA and Tri-Phonola) -- and their cultural-historical meaning.

The title of the German radio drama was "Torschlusspanik", by author
William Gaddis.

Can anybody give me information about the author and/or the original
radio drama and the original title?

Wolfgang Heisig

[ "Torschlusspanik" (literally "door closing panic"), means
[ "Closing Time Panic" or "Last Minute Panic" -- the feeling that you
[ are about to be left behind, and the panic which follows. One
[ economic writer proposes that the German term be used to describe
[ a stock market crash and panic, such as occurred in 1929.
 [
[ At http://www.nyx.net/~awestrop/gaddis/ is list of web sites about
[ William Gaddis, which begins: "William Gaddis (1922-1998) was
[ considered by some to be America's finest 20th-century novelist."
 [
[ Perhaps a patient MMDer could search the list of works by Gaddis
[ and locate the English title for Wolfgang. -- Robbie
