Following John Phillips comments about removing roll labels I recall
my recent experiences in this matter.  My grandfather was an avid stamp
collector and when I was young showed me how to remove stamps from
their mailing envelopes.  I guessed this would work equally well for
removing roll labels from damaged leaders etc.

First cut round the label leaving a bit of a margin.  Next fill a
saucer of shallow dish full of warm water and a just few drops of
washing-up detergent stirred in.  The detergent dissolves the glue
so once the water has gone cold whatever the glue is it stands less
chance of going harder again.  The warm water causes the detergent to
operate faster and for the paper to soak up quicker.

Put the label and backing in the solution and leave it - probably a few
hours -- maybe more, maybe less.  Gradually peel away the label.  If
it's still stuck on put it back and this allows the solution to further
penetrate along through the glue.  When done dry the label out and
press it flat once its dry (otherwise although the detergent should
have removed the majority of the glue it may still stick a bit!).

Hope this helps.  I've done many damaged leaders with salvageable labels
using this method and had no problem so far.
