Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Pianos
By Bill Shirley

I'm like all you who cringe at the thought of anybody dancing on the
tops of our precious pianos. How many movies have you seen dancing on
the lid of a grand piano? And then there is the unfortunate piano that
gets plugged during a saloon gunfight. There needs to be an S.P.C.P.
(Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Pianos).

If the choreographer envisions dancing on top of the upright piano in
"The Music Man" why not construct a substantial wooden shell with two
sides and a fancy top that would unobtrusively slip around the piano?

Years ago our little theater group presented "The Music Man" whereby the
director supplied her own player and I supplied the rolls. No dancing
on top of the piano. To me the player was the star of the show.
