78-L Listserver & 1920s & '30s Music
By A. B. Bonds

It would seem to be time for the periodic referral to the 78 rpm
mailing list, which covers topics much in common with interests here.
This week the subscription is something like sending mail to
<78-l-subscribe@topica.com> ; let me know if that doesn't work.

Some of the best 20's and 30's music sites are Jeff Lichtman's
jukebox (http://www.dnai.com/~swazoo/) and the Red Hot Jazz site
(http://www.redhotjazz.com/). I don't know if they let you download,
but the music is readily available for playback. Some 20's
discographies have also been recently installed on the web.

Part of the problem with downloading music is that there is _still_ an
issue of copyright, which was recently discussed at length on the list.
Apparently much of the music is out of copyright (at least that written
before 1923), but the performances may not be, nor the "realizations"
if the recording has been processed and re-recorded since its original
performance, which is likely. In any case, the mailing list is always
an amusing diversion, though one needs to keep a finger on the delete
key when discussions wander too far.
