Wood Finishes
By Albert de Boer

I have been reading with great interest the contributions by various
people regarding wood finishes and the reference sources they mentioned.
For a long time now I have been trying to duplicate the stain used on
some high quality antique furniture, especially Dutch furniture as
I recall it from my early years.

My grandmother had this beautiful cabinet, which she called a
"secretair", which had a deep reddish color, a bit towards
yellow-orange, which I later also found on other furniture and
"Frisian Staart" clocks (19th century wall clocks). By asking antique
dealers etc., this finish has been called various names, from "draken
bloed" (dragon's blood) to polychrome. Nobody seem to know if there is
a modern equivalent stain and treatment to reproduce this beautiful
color.

I have tried the modern stain called "dragon's blood", but it does not
even come close. Is there anyone of the readers that can help me out ?
