Hupfeld Triphonola Piano & Roll Library
By Jonathan Holmes

I have recently been offered a Triphonola grand and, although I have
restored a number of Hupfeld pianos, I have never seen or heard a
Triphonola. I am unsure of the condition of this piano and would
welcome any suggestions to where I ought to be cautious, i.e., muck/pot
metal.

How does the reproduction compare to other systems such as Welte and
Duo Art? Are they particularly difficult to restore? My experience
with the original German Welte pianos is that the pump is separate from
the piano. Is this the case with the Triphonola?

Has there been any recut programmes for the rolls and, if so, or not,
are there any planned? How rare are the original rolls? I live in the
UK but I'm perfectly happy to buy rolls from anywhere. I have just
purchased some super red Welte rolls from the Normandy region of
France!

Please feel free to e-mail me direct or to make the above a discussion
point in the Digest.

[ I would like to hear about how the Triphonola music library
[ compares with other expression roll brands of the same era.
[ I suppose that's mostly Aeolian Themodist, right? Is the
[ Triphonola mechanism as responsive to pedalling as is a good
[ Themodist or Solodant system by other firms? -- Robbie
