Band Organ Crankshaft Bearing Friction And Lubrication Problem
By Arthur Tanguay

This subject has to do with previous articles in MMD related to the
band organ crankshaft lubrication problem. Having had many years
experience in the mechanical and engineering field here is my
suggestion. Fabricate or machine a plastic (Delrin AF) into a sleeve
or a bearing similar to rod bearings in automotive engines. This
material has a low coefficient of friction and a high resistance to
abrasion and wear. It is used in bearing applications in various
industrial equipment This application will require that the crankshaft
be ground to a uniform diameter and lightly polished. The connecting
rods and pillow blocks must be bored to accommodate the bearing insert.
The bearing insert thickness should be around 0,100 to 0,200 in. I use
a light coating of a Teflon lubricant on the shaft during assembly
to prevent squealing but this is not absolutely necessary. I have found
this material available from San Diego Plastics. Their web site is:

    http://www.sdplastics.com/

Telephone number is 800-925-4855. Print out their catalog page on Delrin.
That will give all the specifications on that product. There may be
other suppliers of this product in your area. You may send your
questions and comments to
